About Dorothea
Since 2020, Dorothea has worked as a hospice nurse liaison for VNS at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. Previously, she had a private practice comprising of BCST (Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy,) integrative nursing, and EOL (End of Life) doula work. Before that, Dorothea was a labor and delivery, mother/baby nurse. She is a mother, wife, daughter, sister, grandmother, and café owner with her husband.
In her current job, Dorothea assesses patients for hospice services. She consults with the medical teams, and the patients and their families about what is occurring and about their wishes for living and dying. She then sets up their care at home, or in the hospital, and communicates with the receiving hospice team. If the patient stays in the hospital, Dorothea functions as a support/guide to patient and family members as well as to the palliative care team on the floor.
In Dorothea’s current position, she brings to the work practices and skills from yoga and meditation, nursing, BCST, doula work and Narrative Medicine. She orients to the dying person and, sometimes primarily so, to the family. Her aim is to help the patient get home, though this can mean different things depending on the person, the family, and the unfolding clinical picture from one moment to the next. The work is nothing if not first and foremost, a spiritual practice. It is humbling and awe-inspiring and never fails to show Dorothea the extraordinary beauty of what it is to be human.
